Feb March Port Stephens - (Apr 12th, 2011)
Port Stephen's Fishing Report
It has been a while since I have posted a report as the is the first couple of consecutive days we have had off since the start of the season.You don't have to be Einstein to know why we have been so busy thats right the fishing has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Since the Lake Macquarie tournament the fishing has been consistent with multiple fish each day predominately striped and black marlin. Without looking for the blues we certainly have found those as well with "Calypso" catching four grand slams for this season.
The tournaments are finally over thank god as it certainly makes a long day of it with the hours of fishing time starting fishing at seven and finishing at five it is quite hectic. Fifty foot boats running in the dark at 30 knots certainly goes against anything we have been taught as Captains but more on that later. Overall we fished extremely well in all the tournaments again this year with great win in the shootout another win for the team in the Interclub and third place overall for ""Born Free"". The fishing during march has only got better with the boys from Oregon Harvester enjoying two days of wild marlin fishing on ""Calypso"" where they caught 20 marlin for the two days not bad for a bunch of first timers.
We are busy up until the start of May where we are starting to get some spaces open for people to come fishing with us in Port Stephens. With yesterdays Club Point Score producing a huge amount of fish with scores of 6,7,8,9 and 10s across the board showing that the fishing is still red hot and shows no sign of slowing anytime soon.
Dates available in May:
* 8 - 20th
* 22nd
* 27-31st
If you are on your own drop us a line as we have many people wanting to share. With fishing this good everyone will get a go.
In the short term Sunday 17th April has just become open. Get a group together and give Tim a call and don't miss out on this awesome bite.
Port Stephens Fishing Report - (Feb 10th, 2011)
PORT STEPHENS FISHING REPORT
As everyone is aware January was one of the bad ones. Water temperatures super high, super strong currents, no bait and very few marlin. This can and does happen with the current weather pattern we are in – a very strong la Nina.
February has seen things improve dramatically with the current slowing and temperatures becoming less than what you would expect in a hot tub and bait where it should be.
We fished the Lake Macquarie Big Fish Bonanza on Born Free with myself, George, Greg, Adam and Jye a smaller crew than normal but as always very competitive.
Day 1 – we saw bait stacked up in the car park area and like all tournaments up here now in come the live baiters and the old can’t beat them join them card gets pulled and we go 4 from 4 for the day with Ningaloo also catching 4 with the rest of the fleet 3 or less released marlin for the day, the majority being stripes. After a marathon run back to Swansea we decided not to go through the bridge and down the channel which was a great idea in the end as many boats had trouble coming back out the next morning with the now notorious shallow, narrow Swansea Channel. Bad enough in the day, dangerous in the dark – one for the Club to really spend some time thinking about as the risk versus reward here are poles apart.
Day 2 – a beautiful run to sea for the whole fleet although a 4.30am start which is normal for all these tournaments with a 7am start fishing time (another very dangerous issue). Bait stilled formed up nicely in the car park but the bite slowed for the fleet. On Born Free we caught 2 from 2 which put us in a very position with 3 fish clear of the fleet on count back. Most other boats did not improve their score and we took out Champion Boat Tag and Release, Champion Angler Tag and Release and Most Tag and Release Point Score Marlin. A great way to start our tournaments on the Born Free this year.
The last couple of days fishing aboard Calypso saw the bite improve with Tuesday being a bit of an unusual day for us going only 3 from 7 bites on striped marlin for good friend Lee from China who caught his first marlin (and 2 others) in the day – Well Done Lee.
Yesterday was also pretty consistent with 2 blacks and 2 stripes from as many bites released for the day. The water temp is now sitting around 23.5 to 24.5 which is really nice, very little current, lots of bait and lots of boats.
If you are planning on coming to Port Stephens and have been waiting for the fish to show up before you make a booking now is your time. Things are starting to become pretty consistent on the edge.
